This brochure is for future parents who have been recommended to have an induction or augmentation with oxytocin, and aims to provide them with all the information they need to make the best decision for them and their baby. It is also available in French.

Oxytocin is a high alert medication and there is a heightened risk of causing significant patient harm when used in error. The Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health (PCMCH) have developed best practice recommendations for the safe administration of oxytocin used in augmentation and/or induction.  The overall goal of this project is to reduce adverse outcomes associated with the misuse of oxytocin by reducing variation in care and reinforce safe drug administration principles.

To support implementation of these best practices, various other tools have been created such as a standardized order set and safety checklist. In particular, this brochure for future parents was developed in collaboration with Best Start by Health Nexus. Please read the entire report on the PCMCH website prior to implementing any of these tools.
